How the labels work

Every label carries the same few clues, in the order your helpers need them.

  • The color is the room. Match it with the same color of packing tape, and anyone carrying boxes knows where each one goes without reading a word. The color's name prints too, for black-and-white printers.
  • The number is the box. "Kitchen 3 of 8" tells you which box you're holding, and whether one is missing from the pile.
  • The QR code is optional. Link it to a box in Stow Haven and the app keeps the photos and the list of what's inside. A stranger who scans it sees nothing about your stuff.

Link a label to a box in Stow Haven (free)

  1. In Stow Haven, add a box and tick Link QR code after saving.
  2. Scan the label you stuck on that box.
  3. Snap a photo of what's inside and list the things you'll go looking for.

Already added the box? Open its menu and choose Scan / Link QR Code. The free plan covers up to 10 boxes.

Stow Haven remembers what's in every box, so you don't have to be the one who remembers.

Printing tips

  • Print at 100% (or "Actual size"), with "Fit to page" turned off.
  • Print a test page on plain paper first and hold it behind a label sheet against a window.
  • Keep shiny packing tape off the QR code. The glare can stop a phone from reading it.
  • Tick Two labels per box and put one on the top and one on the side, so you can read it when boxes are stacked.

All our free label makers

  • Moving box labels (this page). For a home move: color-coded by room, numbered "Kitchen 3 of 8".
  • Storage box labels. Numbered to match one list of what’s inside, for a storage unit, attic or garage.
  • Business labels. For an office move, business storage or organizing a supply room, with your company name on every label.

Questions

Are these labels really free?
Yes. Print as many as you like. There's no sign-up and no email, and the whole tool runs right here in your browser.
What happens when someone scans the QR code?
With a phone's camera, the code opens a short page that explains the label — it never shows what's inside the box. In the Stow Haven app, you link each label to one of your boxes, so the code belongs to that box in your inventory.
Do I need the app to use these labels?
No. The color tells everyone which room a box goes to, and the number tells you which box it is. If you'd rather skip the QR code, untick it before you print.
Which label sheets should I buy?
Avery 5164 or 8164 (3⅓″ × 4″, 6 per sheet) gives you the most room. Avery 5163 or 8163 (2″ × 4″, 10 per sheet) works too, and "More sizes" has the rest, including A4 sheets. No labels at home? Print on plain paper, cut them apart, and tape them on.
Can I use my label printer?
Yes. Pick 4″ × 6″ for a Rollo, Zebra or other shipping-label printer, or find your DYMO or Brother labels under "More sizes". Label printers print in black, so each label spells out its tape color.
I need more labels for a room. Can the numbers carry on?
Yes. After you print, choose "Start the next batch". Each room picks up from its next number, so Kitchen carries on at 9 instead of starting over. On a part-used sheet of labels, the next print starts on the first empty label.
Can I keep separate lists?
Yes. Make a list for each move, building or storage unit. Each one keeps its own rooms, labels and settings.
Why are my labels printing a little off?
Set the scale to 100% (some printers call it "Actual size") and turn off "Fit to page". Then print a test page on plain paper and hold it behind a label sheet against a window. If they still don't line up, nudge them under "Part-used sheet or labels printing off?"
Can I print from my phone?
On Android, yes: print straight away, or save a PDF and print it later. iPhone browsers can't print exact label sizes, so choose Plain paper or print from a computer.
Do you keep my room names?
No. Your lists are saved in this browser so they're waiting next time. We only count how many labels get printed. Each QR code is random and carries nothing personal.
